Winterton Working Men's Angling Club
The club was formed in the early 1930s by the members of the main Working Men's Club. Matches were fished on the river Ancholme, locally, and a couple of matches were fished on rivers such as the Witham and Trent, when a bus was hired for the trip away. The winner of a match would receive a silver cup and a small amount of sweepstake money. The cups were generally donated by companies who supplied the club with beer. The John Smith's Cup, Barnsley Cup and Inde Coope Cup are still competed for today.
In the early 1970s the club leased a pond from Normanby Estate and this was particularly popular for the pleasure anglers who did not fish matches. Membership at this time was restricted to 70 anglers. However, poor returns from the pond and constant problems with swimmers, poachers and fly tipping saw the club give up the lease. Although the membership dipped slightly, the match fishing side of the club went from strength to strength.
In 1985 the club joined the National Federation of Anglers to fish in the National Championships. There were five divisions and all clubs, on joining, had to start in the lowest division.
In the first year Winterton WMAC finished in 28th place and stayed in division 5. Promotion to division 4 finally came in 1989 and to division 3 in 1996. In 1998 another promotion saw the team move up to division 2.
Finally, in 2002, promotion to division 1, the premier league, was achieved when the team fished the championship on the Boston drains. Winterton provided the individual winner, Steve Bontoft, who was crowned 2002 Division 2 National Champion.
Since 2002 the club team has competed in the premier division and, in 2008, was placed fifth whilst fishing on the River Hunstpill and King's Sedgemoor Drain in Somerset, against teams who were mostly sponsored by tackle companies. This was a fantastic achievement.
The angling club fishes twenty matches throughout the year and each angler scores points for their position in the match. The best eight scores are counted up and the ten members with the highest points are deemed to be the team for the National Championship.
Membership of the angling club is open to all, provided they are members of the main Winterton Working Men's Club, which is also open. Junior members are encouraged, provided a parent is a member of the main club, but under 16s must be accompanied to matches by an adult family member.
Matches are held on varied venues: some commercial fisheries (e.g. Messingham Sands, Pasture House, Grange Park), some rivers (e.g. Ancholme, Trent, Derwent), some drains and canals.
