Winterton Twinning Association
Since 1993 Winterton has been twinned with Saffre, a town in the Pays de la Loire region of western France.
As part of the twinning experience, families from the community of Saffre visit families in Winterton, and Winterton families stay with families in Saffre. The communities have become good friends and anyone wishing to join them should get in touch with the Twinning Association.
We are self-funding, but the Council do pay for a Civic Reception now and again to receive our French visitors.
Our officers are:
- Chair - Gail Summerfield (tel: 733940)
- Vice Chair - Lucinda Hopkins
- Treasurer - Hazel Collingwood
- Minutes Secretary - Mary Burnett
- Publicity/Travel Officer - Jack Morton (tel: 732868)
Jack Morton reviews the August 2009 visit to Saffre
This August saw another successful visit to Saffre by 23 members ranging from 8 months to mature 70s.

We were pleased to include our local Police Officer, Amanda Barnett and her daugther. This year we sailed from Portsmouth to Caen which reduced the coach travel to Saffre in France to 3 hours.
On our arrival we were welcomed in the town square by the Saffre Mayor ,The Saffre Twinning President and it seemed by most of the locals with the usual wine, cakes, soft drinks etc. Our first time visitors were most impressed by the warmth of the welcome and quickly joined in the proceedings. We all then retired with our allocated Hosts to spend a relaxing evening being wined and dined.
As usual, our Hosts had arranged a great programme for us which included a visit to a beautiful park in Nantes with of course, a picnic and the rest of the day in the city centre, travelling around the tram system visiting the old quarters and a museum which housed a 30 foot mechanical elephant that could

walk around the square. The following day we went to the 'sea side' at Le Croisic, first a visit to the Ocearium, picnic , then on to the beach. The next day we went to a wonderful market in the ancient town of Clisson, which pleased our ladies, then a picnic of course followed by a visit to a country house and gardens. The next day was free with our Hosts who had arranged various activities for their visitors and in the evening we were entertained in the gounds of the Chateau with games, a bar-b-que and music in which two of our members took part, the Reverent Alice Nunn on violin and Derick Liversidge on the mandolin. The last full day was spent with our hosts and visits to beaches and places of interest was the order of the day. In the evening we were wined and dined yet again by our Hosts and so to bed.
On the morning of our departure we were entertained to breakfast in the Town square and after speeches and lots of hugs etc and a few tears we boarded our coach, waved goodby to old and new found friends and with some sadness began our journey back to Winterton where we will begin planning for the 2010 visit from Saffre Twinning.
